Getting everything you want? Of course, then we'd be truly happy. But, here's the thing; even in THAT situation, the brain will not let you be happy. Why? Because, like you said, the brain makes up excuses or situations that make you otherwise unhappy. Being truly happy, you still can't be happy. It is how the human brain works. Nitro, your life could be much worse. Now, think about the exact opposite. Imagine you're dirt poor, your family can't afford a house, you have no food. How would THAT make you feel? Pretty shitty, right? This is the thing, "Your life could be worse" really doesn't help anyone at all. It just makes the subject feel unimportant and like they're overreacting. It might feel that way, but, sadly, its true. Its not the professional way to do it, but I also don't have a degree in psychology, so.....

But that doesn't help anyone feel better at all. It just makes them feel guilty for being unhappy.

That's the point. To make them stop.

It doesn't work like that. You can't shame somebody out of depression.

I've shamed a lot of people out of depression, so clearly, something's working.

Okay, then try this: make a list of everything you want to become in the next 10 years. Don't lie, put EXACTLY what you want to become. Then, make a list of things you think are wrong with you. Compare them, and cross off things that you think conflict. Like:
Things I want to become:
Less paranoid Better looking
Things I think are wrong with me:
My appearance Lack of trust in my family
Cross off appearance and becoming better looking. That WILL happen eventually. (Remember, that was just an example.)
If this doesn't work, I have a few more....

"Cross off appearance and becoming better looking. That WILL happen eventually." Yeeeah I'm sure. It will. My acne is clearing up, and I'm frickin' 20. How do you think I feel? I have less self confidence than most people.
