I watched the series premiere of G1 Transformers.

It was pretty bad. The plot moved along at an uncomfortably fast pace, nothing was ever really explained as to why it was happening, and the "4 million years later" bit makes absolutely no sense. Quite frankly, character design aside, Michael Bay has a better understanding of the show than people give him credit for.

Then I watched a season 3 episode I remember having on one of our tapes, Madman's Paradise.

It was... actually pretty good! The whole episode may have happened because of Grimlock's buffoonery, but everything moved along at a more natural pace while the writing exhibited some degree of subtlety, cleverness, and decent characterization. Highlights include the quintesson telling his story while the audience is shown what actually happened, everybody panicking when they heard Daniel ran off with Grimlock with Rodimus replying, "Don't panic yet. Stay calm until we know what's going on. Then we'll panic," and for whatever reason I found the ambassador's use of the term, "post embryonic lifeform," quite amusing. The Golden One's chanting into Blaster's microphone was actually pretty cool. And let's not forget, there appeared to be some on screen character deaths!

There may be hope for this show yet!

What has me weirded out, though, is that I have absolutely no memory of the character Grimlock. Things like the red circle in the sky or the rhinobot prying open the hatch fired off some very faint memory synapses, but in spite of how prominent he was here, everything with Grimlock was completely new to me.
