So, like, you think the Pope is a thing because St. Peter was granted the authority to say whatever the hell he wants and have it count as law for both here and the afterlife, and him passing down this authority to the popes. Problems being, if the pope has to pass down his authority, the succession was over long ago with the first assassinated pope. If the pope must be rightfully elected, well, just look at this guy: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pope_Damasus_INot only was he never rightfully elected, the dude killed his competition's support, becomes Pope, then finishes the job.

Any institution can become corrupted, including the church. Are you arguing that because of corruption centuries ago, it can never be repaired?

Judging by its conduct today, I would say, err, yes.

Exactly so.
Even assuming the papal succession was at one point a thing, the actual authority granted by God was lost a long time ago through either the unexpected death of a Pope or invalid elections. You may have a Pope now that is a well respected leader of sorts, but said Pope has no actual ties to St. Peter, and thus no authority under God to declare edicts and all that stuff you expect the Pope to be allowed to do.

The only way that connection would be lost is if every priest in the world keeled over.

And the only way that could be true is if every single antipope was also legitimate.

Why would there not be ties? The pope can be pretty much anyone. Orthodox remains separate from the authority chain but we're in communion with them. Anglicans can similarly note our connections.

Because there is no unbroken chain back to Peter. The current pope has as much authority over the afterlife as a sea sponge.

The church is more than the pope. He happens to be the leader at the time.

The pope is supposed to be more than just the leader of a church, but has no authority otherwise. He's the same as any other guy, just with a sillier hat than most.

What do you think about the 2000 election? Does it mean Obama and everyone after him are illegitimate presidents?

USA governmental laws don't involve the passing down of authority from one figure to the next, but a granting of authority from the people to a representative. The President has power because we the people allow it, not because they have an inherent right to rule.
