And fuck the people who cant afford the exorbitant prices? There are these things called "charities" where people actually volunteer their time/money... I understand how you want to be compassionate, and have to put your faith in the government because you have faith in nothing else, but those politicians only care for the votes.

For the last time, it's not parliament I have faith in, it's the civil service. Public companies have no concept of greed, because nobody is in charge of the finances. Their only goal is what's best for the country. What could you possibly criticise about that?
And the charities weren't exactly helping the 35 million uninsured people, were they?

They help when they can. People would donate more if they had more of their own money not going to taxes.

Who cares? Why do you need competition if everybody is getting covered already? The government does things cheaper and better in nearly every case, as far as I can see.
And does it matter if they would have donated or not? I bet most people wouldn't, what with the individual success culture that capitalism breeds. And if you were, then great, taxes just make it compulsory.

I value freedom over all those benefits.

you say looking at what's happening to Britain is depressing, yet you argue the U.S. should try and be like them?

Then I guess I value prosperity and happiness over freedom. I'd freely admit that.

Government? Better? Cheaper? Pfft. Obviously we all know about the inefficient government stereotype, but elimination of the profit margin easily makes up for that.

So is Brave New World your dream state? >_> We can't just keep doing what we're doing to the earth and each other. If people can't shape up on their own, then somebody has to take charge.

I still want to know why I should bother trying in a socialist country. Why should I try to reach my fullest when I could get a mediocre job and let the government take care of the rest? Why should I go to college to try and get a good job with healthcare benefits if the government will just give them to me? Why should I try? Socialism hinders progress Competition provides motivation which leads to progress No motivation is as strong Hell, you're the one who argues humanity is so great because of its progress Competition is a necessity there is no reason to TRY without it sure I could work, but why try to achieve my potential and work my hardest? as far as I'm concerned the best argument for socialism was made by Edward Bellamy in Looking Backward and even that was unrealistic, idealistic, and flawed

you say looking at what's happening to Britain is depressing, yet you argue the U.S. should try and be like them? It's not our social policies that are the problem, it's fighting two world wars, continually trying to maintain a global presence, and the collapse of our manufacturing industries that are the culprit.

So is Brave New World your dream state? >_> quick unrelated question, was that any good? It's always mentioned as a classic distopian novel (along with 1984, which I already read)
