Well, there I was. I had finally arrived, a little wet but otherwise fine. Just another stop on my journey, another mountain to climb. But for some reason, things felt...different. I just couldn't shake the feeling that there was something special about this place.
"Hmm, might as well get going" I said to myself, as I made my way up. The whole place seemed to be abandoned, and indeed it was. I didn't come across anyone else on the way. That didn't mean nobody had ever been here before, in fact quite a few people had come here in the past. It was just so out of the way, through the plains and across the sea, that the chance of meeting someone else here was slim.
So why was I traveling so far out of the way? Curiosity, I guess. I heard there was an old cemetary somewhere around here, but I hadn't come across it yet. Probably more towards the top. I was also interested in just getting out for a while and exploring nature for a bit, but my initial plans had been ruined by rain, so I guess I had to go to plan B and make the most of what I had.
I came to a point where I had to go through a dark cave if I wanted to proceed. Good thing I brought a light, no need to lend one from a koopa. What a novel concept...a koopa, in this world? Nah. Closest thing we had here...well, it hadn't even been discovered yet. Maybe that's why I was here, to discover something no one else had ever seen before. Probably wasn't going to happen, but hey, I could dream.
Finally, the way out of this place. I exited the cave and looked out across the waters far below. I was making some progress, now. I could make it to the top before sundown if I hurried. But it was such a sight, I was reluctant to leave. Finally I convinced myself that the view was probably even better at the summit.
However, as I made my way up I came across a dense fog, one which only seemed to get thicker the more I climbed. I became nervous. What if I accidentally walked off the trail and plummeted to my death? I decided to wait for a bit, to see if the fog would let up. A while later the fog began to lift slightly, and I caught my first glimpse of the cemetary. It was kind of creepy, to be standing there in a foggy graveyard, alone and far from any form of civilization as we know it. But it was also exciting, to have gone this far in just one day.
I walked on and finally reached the summit, a little tired but also feeling a sense of accomplishment. The storm clouds on the horizon were beginning to move closer, and the sound of thunder reached my ears. I definitely did not want to be caught up here in a storm, so I started making my way back down. Too bad I couldn't stay up here longer and explore, though. This old place was bound to be full of mysteries just waiting to be unearthed. I could always come back...maybe on another day.
Heavy rain began pouring down, and lightning flashed in every direction. Dagnabbit, the storm had approached way faster than I thought it would. I had to find some shelter, and fast. I ran on until I reached the cave again, then quickly ducked inside. I looked back out and wondered if I would be stuck out here for the night...the storm didn't show any sign of letting up soon.
"Might as well make myself comfortable..." I turned on my flashlight and started walking back down to the beach. Maybe I could take off if the waves weren't too large. Though they probably would be, to my disappointment. Something was wrong, though. Had I made a wrong turn? I don't remember coming through this part on my way up. A few seconds later, I hit a dead end. That's odd...I shone my light along the walls of the cave, trying to reorient myself. Looking around more closely, I began observing signs of life. Someone, or something, had been living here at some point. What if they were still around? I started geting nervous. This definitely wasn't the same cave I had passed through on my way up...I ran back towards the entrance, desperate to get out of here in case whatever had been in here before decided to come back. A flash of lightning from outside revealed the shadow of a figure blocking the exit.
"Who are you and what are you doing in here!?" it asked angrily.
I stood there, hesitating to speak for a few seconds but working up the courage to say something. "Sorry, the storm...I must have lost my way...I just wanted to get out of the rain-"
"What are you even doing on this mountain? I bet you're one of those guys in the strange uniforms that came here a while back!"
"I don't know what you mean" I shone the light on myself. "No 'strange uniform' here..."
"So why are you here, then? You're not trying to c-*cough cough*"
"Are you okay?" I asked.
"Yeah, it's just...I'm all wet and tired out, then I come back to find some stranger in my place."
I reached into my bag. "Methinks I have a towel somewhere in here, maybe you could dry yourself off with it..."
"That would be nice."
"Grr, where is it? Ah, here it is." I tossed over the towel.
"Um, thanks...so, what are you doing here?"
"I just thought I'd get out and do some exploring today. Looks like I got in quite the mess, though."
"Well, I guess you're stuck here for a while. I'm not going to just turn you out with weather like this. As long as you don't try to kidnap me or anything."
"Kidnap you? Why would I do that?"
"I don't know, I've heard stories about it happening before."
"Well I'm definitely not going to. You can trust me, or my name isn't Brandon."
---
"So...you surfed all the way here, just to see some old worn-out gravestones?"
"Yeah, pretty much" I answered.
"That's kind of cool, to come all this way to see what's out here. If you want, I could take you around this place in the morning."
"You'd really do that? That'd be awesome. Maybe you could start by showing me the way back to the trail! Heh..."
"No problem. Good night, Brandon."
---
The storm had passed overnight, and now we were on the beach, looking across the open water upon a spectacular sunrise.
"What a view."
"Yeah, I had a feeling you'd like it...*sigh*"
"Is something wrong?" I asked.
"No, it's just...I've never been off this island my whole life. And last night...you were talking about all the places you've been to, and everything you've seen...I wish I could go see all those places, too."
I thought for a moment. "Maybe you can."
"How? I'm stuck here..."
"Not if you come with me."
"You'd...you'd let me come with you?"
"Sure. We can go see all those places together. Places you've never been before, places both of us have never been before...methinks a HUGE AWESOME ROAD TRIP is in order!"
And so, with a newfound companion our hero continues on his journey, taking names and playing games. Who knows what adventures await them? It's a mystery. But no matter what faces them on their voyage, they'll be sure to overcome the challenges with the REAL SUPER POWER OF TEAMWORK!
To Be Continued (lol not rly)
And that's all I have to say about that.
