if you want to get all physics-ey then you can argue that no one told you the composition of the tree or the ground in the forest

I've never seen a soundproof forest, I didn't consider that pertinent information.

yes but no one is in this forest so perhaps no one has ever been in this forest so perhaps it is an undiscovered soundproof forest
the point it you don't know

I can't make a decision on the basis of information I don't have >_>

I always thought one hand clapping just means you wave your hand in a clapping motion and make no sound (other than the displacement of air I suppose)

Whoever made up the question confuses sound and hearing. Sound is from vibrations mechanical evergy going though a medium. Even a deaf person can detect sound.

Sound is from vibrations mechanical evergy going though a medium. Even a deaf person can detect sound. The vibrations alone do not meet the english language's definition of sound "The sensation produced in the organs of hearing when the surrounding air is set in vibration in such a way as to affect these; also, that which is or may be heard; the external object of audition, or the property of bodies by which this is produced." ^ the definition of sound according to the Oxford English dictionary the sound is the received sensation, not the wave through the medium to look at things lightly tree falls, you don't know if said vibrations will be detectable of course there will be freakin' vibrations to some degree, because that's just the way the world works, but you can't guarantee it will be something that can be classified as sound, it has to cross a certain threshold Also when looking at philosophical phrases and such you don't break them down into pure mathematics or basic science (and fuck, "basic" science is almost always flawed when you look at it at a higher level and almost never addresses more than the most typical cases) statements like these tend to have more to do with word subtleties and placement

With that definition, no.

it needs to be possible to perceive the vibrations to be classified as sound you have no guarantee that the vibrations will exist to an extent that can be perceived that's the point I'm trying to get at and I'm not arguing anymore tonight because I've hit the point where I'm so tired I'm having trouble forming proper and complete thoughts
