I'm a sociopath because I'm a quiet recluse that spends too much time on a computer. Cartoon horses have nothing to do with that.

I'm going to assume this change is a big deal in-universe, because I don't get why it matters. >_>

It matters because people freak out over dumb things.

So she gets wings. Whoop dee fucking doo. It's not like she wasn't ridiculously OP before, this won't change anything except let her flutter around like a proper technicolored magic small horse. And if she becomes a princess, well, it's something of a foregone conclusion considering the pilot episodes establishes that she studies under, and spent some time practically bring raised by, the magic all-ruling princess of the land.
So much freaking out over nothing. If they choose to ignore the fact that this is the first actual plot development in 3 seasons, and complain that it's only happening because of marketing and to sell more toys, this isn't anything new. And it's not something they shouldn't have expected or known about in the first place. And the humans, well, the original shows featured humans at one point. Again, not new.
I don't quite like how everyone is jumping to the conclusion that this will ruin the show forever. For priding themselves on fighting stereotypes and the status quo and pledging their mantra as tolerating everything and not judging things by their covers, these bronies sure are a hypocritical bunch.
Who the hell cares. Seriously. It won't change the past episodes. It won't affect your life in some terrible way, unless you bought stocks in MLP and expect this future development to tank your personal economic status and make you homeless. Deal with it, suck it up, and just hope for the best and see what happens. Oh, and growing up should happen somewhere in there as well.
I love the show! I have pony merchandise on my shelf like a complete queer and a ton of episodes and songs on my iPod. And I don't remember my panties ever getting bunched up as much as these folks. Geez.
Also it's late and I apologize if my writing wasnt all that coherent.

The brony bunch forget one important detail: My Little Pony was never meant for them in the first place. It is, first and foremost, a little girl's franchise, and That's where Hasbro's priorities lie. Sure, if older men come along and sincerely enjoy the ride, more power to them, it just means more money to make on the side! This has never really been an issue before G4: grown ups where never really interested.
However, Faust came along, opened up the franchise to adults, and suddenly the lines of who is belonged to were blurred. Ponies quickly became an echo chamber, and the show itself wasn't helping, by pandering to the older crowd with various shoutouts, including Derps. The recent changes come as a shock because they thought they owned the playground when they don't. Twilicorn, to an adult, is not to advance the plot and shake things up, but is an executive enforced decision to push toys. A sensitive issue for adults, but preteens frankly don't care. The issue with Derps is simple: before, they were willing to play along, but then the Guardians of the Playground came down and said, No, this is not appropriate for this place. It is viewed as inconsistent, and seen as symbolic of being forgotten or actively kicked out of the thing they once enjoyed.
Can't blame Hasbro, though. Constantly appealing to the same adult crowd is a quick way towards stagnation. Just look at what's happened to Japan's animation industry.

I also must say, from a Mormon perspective, Twilicorn makes nothing but perfect sense.
(I'm willing to explain if people are curious)
