How does the mafia game work?

During the Day phase, all players will debate and decide who is most needing of an execution.
To cast your vote, post Vote###Username, to rescind your vote, post Rescind###Username.
In addition you may choose to cast a vote for no execution, Abstain###.

Day ends when someone gets a majority (over half of the alive players) vote on their head.

Isn't that what happened we all voted for someone? How are we meant to base our votes on anything?

You don't vote randomly without reason.

We discuss it amongst ourselves. Sure, during the first day we have literally nothing to go on, but afterwards, by looking at what happened during the night phases and more importantly how people act we can decide who's probably scum. Then, we vote.

How am I meant to know what happens at night apart from which character is dead? I have no special investigating powers or anything.

for example, Tails pushed for a Laharls lynch, but it didn't work out and then Tails dies during the night. Laharls looks suspicious as a result.
