I did it all the time in SotN. Actually, I used Mist, which let's you go through the boss, but I don't know if it's in DoS.

In DoS Alucard can launch 3 fireballs (hells fire type thing) and turn into a bat
His magic draining attack (forget what they call it, when you press "A") involves him warping behind the boss, attacking twice, and warping back

In SotN you have to do the hadouken movements to do the warping attack.
