everything fell apart
it went gold (no changes for 6 months), but people were unhappy with the build (people REALLY disliked the boundary changes)
there was a lack of communication between the community and those leading the project
and P:M hype siphoned off followers
and then, if this post is to be trusted, Blind and Veril (who were leading the project) quit www.smashboards.com/showpost.php?p=11115328&postcount=2634

I still have some hope that someone will pick it up and finish it off

I stopped trying to keep up with the Brawl+ scene since they stopped bothering with PAL (last one was 4.0?). I've yet to try Brawl- and ProjectM. Hopefully, one (or even both) will at least be good, so that the existence of my Brawl disk isn't a waste of space.

Brawl- is only good for the lulz as far as I'm concerned
P:M I dislike on principal since it's essentially stripping all the changes Brawl made, even the ones that weren't bad. Also, the hype surrounding it is so great it's bound to disappoint some. Hopefully it goes and dies in a fire
