Just wanna start a discussion on what type of gameplay you guys prefer.
Personally, I like a variety of games and feel a good game should dabble in more genres than the main one ('cept fighting games, they get a free pass).
If I have to pick an absolute favorite, it'd be Metroidvania. It's the only genre ('sides fighting again) that doesn't really benefit that much from RPG elements since character growth is already a part of it, what with gaining new abilities being essential to the genre for accessing new areas instead of the event flags that RPGs love to use, plus, exploration has a lot to do with it and it's not linear, allowing for freedom and basically encouraging a path rather than forcing you down it. Most of the time anyway. (I'm looking at you, Fusion and Other M)
What do you guys like?

If we're only allowed to choose one, open worlders.

Don't make me choose mang. 3D platforming gets a mention since I loved the days of Rare and Nintendo making sweet love. I just can't forget about Conker's Bad Fur Day. Ultimately, I prefer turn based RPGs. You know, because that's where the weeabo shit goes.

depends, are we talking playing alone? Because otherwise it tends to be "whatever I can have a laugh with with friends" with bonus points if it's something I can take seriously and legitimately improve at

Nah, not necessarily. It could be any genre, single player or multiplayer.
In my perfect world, every single game, no matter what, will have a multiplayer option that works well. Depending on the genre, Vs., Co-op or both. Multi-player ALWAYS improves a game, no matter how limited, because any game can be enjoyed with friends even with single player, so with Multi-player we don't even have to be stuck watching or taking turns most of the time.

I like games that have Platformer 2D but its in 3d with some sections, and along the way there is fighting bad guys and you have to Beat 'Em Up in Real Time with Strategy because I hate Turn Based Strategy but the view is in First Person and there is a lot of Action and some Adventure and maybe a bit of Action Adventure where you must solve Puzzles using Logic and the levels are Open World in a playground's Sandbox and you must use Stealth while reading a Picture Book about Metroidvania and the game has constant incomming RPG fire from terrorists.
