I never quite got the hang of typing numbers from the top row; I ordinarily use that for making selections in video games and stuff. If I'm typing out phone numbers or using a calculator, I find the numpad to be much quicker: everything is accessed from one hand, and there's no need to hold the shift key when typing in operators. Much slicker.
