At that point, the military was more concerned with maintaining what it already had and avoiding losses. They weren't conquering new lands for a while. Even victories against the Persians didn't overreach and sought strategic positions that they could defend. The other stuff was outsourced to buffer states and tribes because it was easier. The main problem was that border tribes started becoming more organized, and the empire faced threats from multiple sides. An emperor could shore up one border but in his absence another front would have problems. If he gave more military power to someone so they could defend those places in his absence, they were likely to get power-hungry and rebel.

Such is life... At least it's better than the dark ages. And everything turned out alright in the end, sort of (though I can't help but wonder if we would have a Martian colony by now if the Roman empire hadn't collapsed)

Or FTL travel, but if we believe Einstein that's probably impossible.

Meh, the term "dark ages" is kind of falling out of favor...

Seems like a 1000 year period with no particular innovation whatsoever, though I guess I could be wrong.

The East survived...and transition in the West was not complete chaos.

had to do laundry so I decided to read while waiting for it to finish was reading some Lovecraft (read Dagon, The Terrible Old Man, Facts Concerning the Late Arthur Jermyn, Nyarlathotep, The Picture in the House, and I'm halfway through Herbert West-Reanimator) enjoying his stories so far, even got hills during a couple of them, they can be quite creepy
edit: wish I could read more but I have to wake up in 4 and a half hours dang classes

Read some things on the Columbian Exchange. Potatoes were a good new world crop because if you have potatoes, butter and milk you're all set nutrition-wise. Some historians even attributed their adoption in the old world as leading to increased population growth and urbanization - responsible for as much as 47 percent of such growth. This in addition to other crops also influenced industrialization. Rubber became important later on. Quinine was extremely valuable as a treatment against malaria, and without it it may have been impossible for Europeans to expand into Africa like they did. Maybe the question isn't whether society would've advanced earlier if Rome hadn't collapsed, but whether it would've advanced as quickly if not for Columbus' discovery P.S. tomatoes were a new world crop so those Italians were only partially responsible for pizza.

Education stuff, and how grand technology is to help people with disabilities. Listing off all the features, I could swear they were trying to sell me a video camera.
